Devry Smith Frank LLP is an established 70+lawyer, full-service law-firm. We are currently looking for an intermediate accounting/controller to join our team.

Reporting to the Director of Finance and Managing Partner, the successful candidate will be responsible for the accounting team handling of accounting, financial reporting, cash-flow analysis, accounts receivable, accounts payable, general ledger, capital management and budget management.  The candidate will also liaise with auditors, financial institutions, customers, vendors and regulatory agencies.  He or she will support management planning and decision making by identifying, maintaining, and evaluating information and recommending actions.

The core responsibilities for this position are:

  • Assist with the functions of seven person accounting department: accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, trust accounting, general accounting;
  • Prepare, review and analyze financial statements and activities of multi-companies;
  • Prepare, review management reports, forecasts, billing reconciliations;
  • Prepare, review information required for year end audits;
  • Maintain, liaison with banks on general, trust and credit banking;
  • Maintain, review cash flow and forecast;
  • Manage to accounting software, Aderant Expert and PCLAW.
  • Manage the electronic billing systems of TyMetrix 360, Legal-X, Serengeti Tracker;
  • Evaluate, create and update accounting policies and procedures; and
  • Ensure adherence to Law Society and all statutory requirements.

The successful candidate will not only have an eagerness to learn and take on new responsibilities but must also bring to the position:

  • CPA(CA) designation;
  • Minimum of 4 total years of experience;
  • Legal industry experience would be an asset;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills;
  • Ability to perform at a high level in a fast paced environment;
  • Superior interpersonal skills needed to maintain effective working relationships with people at all levels;
  • Team player with the ability to take initiative and work independently;

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Operations Coordinator provides support and assists with the day-to-day maintenance and operation of DSF’s main building and additional offices located in Barrie, Innisfil, Haliburton and Whitby. In addition, the incumbent is responsible for coordinating and supervising leasehold improvements and renovation and construction, performing minor repairs and improvements to the premises to ensure a safe, functional and clean work environment.

In this position, you are required to respond to emergency/critical situations with an appropriate level of urgency and escalate to the appropriate staff as necessary on a timely basis.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES

  • Ensure the safe day-to-day operation of the premises in all three locations.
  • Maintain interior and in some instances exterior conditions, appearance and operation of all premises at optimal levels.
  • Immediately respond to all critical and/or safety related maintenance concerns and advise the Director of Operations in a timely fashion.
  • Coordinate the moving and transport of law practice assets, furniture etc as well as assets purchased from time to time.
  • Assist with routine inspections of the facilities and equipment and communicate any deficiencies and provide suggestions for enhancement or repair.
  • Respond promptly and courteously to facility service requests from all DSF locations and perform preventative and corrective maintenance in a timely manner.
  • Perform minor repairs and preventative maintenance tasks related to the building, furniture and equipment, including advising when a task is best handled by an outside contractor.
  • Organizing, implementing and maintaining cleaning and maintenance schedules.
  • Work with vendors to obtain quotes for work projects and organize/oversee the work for contractors and vendors.
  • Order and maintain necessary supplies for office stationary and cleaning supplies for all three locations.
  • Ensure the maintenance of kitchens/kitchenettes/lunch room supplies and cleaning stocks.
  • Coordinate with other office locations on daily/weekly basis regarding any office/cleaning/maintenance needs.
  • Reception coverage when needed and occasional travel to other two locations for the same.
  • Develop and maintain contractor and vendor contact lists for all locations.
  • Obtain quotes for all construction work required and negotiate best quotes.
  • After hours work and alternate office work may be needed.
  • Provide administrative support to the legal assistants and clerks from time to time including, file storage, scanning, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned from time to time.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with employees, contractors and service providers.
  • Ability to effectively manage and prioritize multiple responsibilities with competing priorities.
  • Ability to apply critical thinking and troubleshooting skills to develop solutions and resolve issues.
  • Ability to travel to multiple locations
  • Demonstrate organizational skills, attention to detail and to take initiative on improving current set up
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Completed High School Diploma.

We are seeking an experienced Real Estate Law Clerk with at least 4+ years’ relevant experience to work in our office in Barrie. Proficiency with Conveyancer, Teraview, title searches, and real estate transactions. Organized and detail oriented. We offer competitive salary and benefits.

We are currently looking for a wills and estates lawyer. The ideal candidate will have 5+ years of experience in estate planning and trust arrangements and a full or partial portable book of business. Experience with taxation issues is a plus, but is not required.

We are currently looking for a tax lawyer to complement our wills/estates and corporate teams.

The ideal candidate will have 5+ years of experience in tax law, with a focus on estate planning, trust arrangements and corporate restructurings, and will have a partial or fully portable practice. Experience with cross-border taxation issues is a plus, but is not required.

We are currently looking to add an experienced planning and development lawyer to join our collegial team in North York.

The successful applicant will be involved in all aspects of municipal and planning law, including land use litigation, expropriation, environmental and constitutional matters including appearances before various courts and administrative tribunals, in particular the OMB. Applicants must have excellent advocacy, interpersonal and communication skills. The ideal candidate will have at least 7 years of related legal experience, preferably gained at a municipality or with a firm representing municipalities. A portable or growing practice is preferred, but is not essential.

We are currently looking for an experienced corporate lawyer to join our office in North York.

The successful candidate will have a growing practice and a business-oriented approach to law. By joining DSF, he or she will enjoy the benefits of established technical, administrative and peer resources critical to growing a practice. The ideal candidate will be entrepreneurial-minded and have 7 to 12 years of business/corporate law experience from a reputable firm or as a sole practitioner. Candidates with a knowledge of tax law as it applies to corporate transactions will be preferred.

ARTICLING & STUDENTS

As a mid-sized full service law firm, our articling students have the opportunity to be exposed to all areas of practice in the firm. Although we may utilize a rotation to give students access to a broad and comprehensive articling experience, DSF maintains an informal component to the articling program. By allowing an informal component to the program, students are able to gain greater access to areas and practices of particular interest.

Many of the lawyers at DSF have also articled here. Our firm invests a tremendous amount of resources into the articling program as we look to our students as a key component of the firm’s continued growth. We endeavour to give our articling students the independence and the ability to make decisions that impact the matters in which they are involved. Lawyers are decision makers and we want to ensure that the necessary skills are learned from the beginning.

Our articling students gain court experience, as well as meet and communicate with clients, lawyers and representatives from outside the firm on the matter in which they are involved. Some of our articling student’s responsibilities include: Weekly attendance at examinations and motions, carriage of small claims court files, and writing articles for our quarterly newsletter. They also assist on motions, pre-trials, mediations, arbitrations, trials (preparing materials, negotiating with opposing parties, and attending), and conduct research.

DSF offers a salary competitive with other mid-sized Toronto firms, and pays the tuition of the bar admission course regardless of hire-back. Salary is not paid during the bar admission course.

DSF is hiring up to four summer law students for 2021. We
accept applications from second year law students. Please forward a complete

students to fill future articling positions.

DSF hires university and college students each summer to assist with administrative tasks. Please forward your application to us for consideration by the end of February. 

DSF complies with the guidelines of the Law Society of Ontario in the recruitment of articling students. The guidelines can be found at www.lsuc.on.ca.  Applications are due by July 6th and interviews will be conducted during the week of August 13th.

The deadline for submitting summer student applications is November 14th. We typically conduct interviews in December and January and try our best to accommodate out of town students.
